How To Keep Up With Blog Hopping

In my last post I talked about How To Get More Comments On Your Blog which was a very popular post from all the great comments I recieved, so thanks to all my readers.

One of the tips on my list was to go Blog Hopping, it is a great way to increase traffic to your blog and build up relationships with your readers, which in return encourages them to leave a comment .

Ok so you start to visit a few blogs and after reading their latest post you leave a comment (if the content is good), if they are using CommentLuv which most bloggers do you will get a link back to your blog and hopefully people will visit your blog in return.

I recommend you start with 5 blogs a day to visit and comment on, it should take about 30-45 minutes to read a post and leave a comment on all 5 blogs, as you do this on a regular basis you will get quicker.

In return you will see at least the author visiting your blog and leaving you a comment, some of their readers may also hop over for a visit, as you continue to do this every day you will get more known to the bloggers in your circle. Don’t forget to sign up for a Gravatar, you may have a problem getting your comments approved without one, it is free to sign up so if you do not have one go ahead and sign up today!

How do you keep track of all the blogs you are visiting? for one thing you should sign up for new updates when they post new content, that way you can hop over as soon as they publish a new post, most people post on a regular schedule so you get to know which days they post, but to make sure of this sign up via RSS or to be on their email list.

I have made a folder with the blogs I visit so I have all the information I need ie: their name and blog URL, some people have spreadsheets to keep all the information, it is whatever works best for you. If you just want to use your RSS reader then that is ok, be comfortable whichever way is best for you.

When you have been visiting those 5 blogs a day and feel you can increase it then why not visit 5 of the ones you like and then 1 or 2 new ones to increase your list, the more you visit the more traffic and comments you will receive. Don’t forget to use the share buttons, after you have written your comment share on any of the social sites you prefer Twitter, Facebook, Google + etc again this will help to get new visitors to your blog.

I can understand that for anyone new it can be a little daunting the thought of trying to keep up with all this blog hopping, and some may say to themseves I can’t do this but take it slowly and if you are not comfortable with visiting 5 blogs at first then start with 1 or 2, it is not a race and you need to go at your own pace, build it up over time and the traffic will come.

If you need more help with the subject of Blog Hopping I have a free gift for you, it is called Blog Hopping Queen by Sally Neill, she shares some great content here to help you get more traffic. You can download it by clicking on the link above or from my Free Gifts Page

How do you keep track of all the blogs you visit? do you use any of the tips I have written about here? or do you have any others you would like to share? I would love to hear your views so please leave a comment below.

To your success

    HI Pauline

    An excellent advice

Though at times it is bit difficult to visit 5 blogs but yes we can surely start with 1 or 2 and then possibly build on that.

You are providing a great service to the newbies like me in blogosphere.

    Thanks a lot for this.

Thanks for being my first comment on this post :)
It can be difficult to manage 5 blogs at the beginning but like I said do what is good for you, it is not good to try and achieve too much and overstretch yourself. I am glad that I am helping people that are just at the beginning of their journey, it is an ongoing learning curve.
Have you seen an increase of comments and traffic to your blog through blog hopping?

When I first started blog hopping I kept writing down all the blogs I was visiting on bits of paper but I had them all over the place on my desk and it just was not good, so I soon wised up and that is when I made myself a folder which I keep on my desktop, I am considering making a spreadsheet and see which I prefer.
Have you seen an increase of traffic to your blog since you started blog hopping?

    Hi Pauline,

I can tell everyone that you’re right and this is agreat way to get traffic. You need to stick with it, but it works. In my opinion to subscribe to the RSS Feed is less effective than to subscribe for email updates of a blog.

The reason for that is that the RSS Feed has a delay, in some cases up to six hours. If you get an email notification it will be immediately and you can be the first or one of the first persons to comment on a blog.

By the way, thanks for the free gift :-)

    Have a nice day,

This proves that you must have signed up for my email updates and not RSS :)
I have to agree with you on that one, I prefer email updates as like you say it is immediate, I know a lot of people prefer RSS it proves that we are all different and have our own personal choices that work for us.
I hope you enjoy the gift, Sally has some great content on this subject to help increase comments and traffic, I have learned some great things from her.

    Hi Pauline,

Some great tips here, just as there was in your previous post. I’ll be adopting a number of them.

I think the secret to effective blog hopping and forum posting is to do it in a way that prevents it becoming tedious. After all these are methods that work best when you stick at them over a long period of time.

Three of your tips: doing a modest amount daily, for a set period of time and getting alerts from sites you can trust to provide valuable and interesting content, can really help maintain your enthusiasm.

    All the best,

P.S. Thank you for the link to the free gift.

      Thanks for stopping by :)
If we do something and we find it tedious then it will be harder to do every day, we will become bored. It is best to make it more enjoyable, I tend to plan time in the morning usually 1 hour to reply to the comments on my blog (like I am doing now :)) and then the same in the afternoon to visit other blogs and leave a comment. I will change that routine from time to time if I have other tasks that need my attention but I do blog hop every day, usually less time on a weekend and maybe only once a day.
I hope you enjoy the free gift, you will get some further great tips from Sally.

Wonderful blog post today Pauline! Excellent tips and so far I haven’t had a problem visiting 5 blogs a day. I aim for 8-10 and some days I make it, other days I don’t. I also respond to every comment on my blog as quickly as I can. Part of a successful blog, is engaging with your subscribers, otherwise you may lose them.
    Happy Blogging!!

      Hi Victoria
Welcome to my blog, it’s nice to see you here :)
I manage to visit around 10 blogs most days, some days I may have other tasks I need to get finished so I have less time to visit 10 and I may make only 5-7 that day but it is ok and long as we keep it up every day.
I agree it is important to respond as soon as possible to comments left on our blogs, it shows our readers that we appreciate them taking time to read our post and leave their comment, I find it rude if I receive no reply at all to any comments I make while visiting other blogs!
Hope you have a great day

    Hello Pauline,

Thanks for sharing this great advice. I started my list with 5 bloggers like you recommend and now I’m up to 15 bloggers/sites I visit at least once a day. It is a little time consuming but I think everyone will agree that the payoff is worth it. Plus it eventually builds friendship, so why wouldn’t anyone want to take advantage of this :)

The easiest way for me to make sure I get it all done is by keeping it on an excel sheet. I have a to-do list that includes reminders like updating my profiles and my blog/website list.

    Hi Pauline,

I do blog hopping like a maniac. Frankly, I must comment of close to 50 blogs a week and considering how busy I am that’s not bad at all.

When you start doing this, you can see a great increase of comments on your own blog. Then you always have the few weirdos that no matter what you do will NEVER visit your blog, but after a while you can just drop them, unless you want to try building relationships with selfish people. I know I don’t.

On the other hand I do have a handful of VERY LOYAL readers who do not use commentluv, but I sure don’t miss a single of their post, because they are loyal and I love their blogs.

    Thanks for this great topic.

Another popular topic Pauline and very well explained.

That’s exactly how I started blog hopping, I visited 5 blogs each day. I also subscribe to their RSS feeds once I find that I’d like to visit them again and then I categorize them by different folders. I don’t like subscribing to an email reminder because they I get overwhelmed with way too many emails and then I feel guilty if I can’t get right to them.

I have to make a note to visit my RSS feed daily but at least it’s a great way to remember the blogs you’ve visited because you won’t any other way.

    Great advice.

I do think the reason your comments get marked as spam (yours did here the first time) is #1 you don’t have a gravatar of yourself, it would be better to have a photo of your face #2 I think it is your name/URL it may get classed as a spam website…..

I think a person will be more likely to approve your comment if you have a picture of your face rather than a plugin, it will help you as when the program puts your comment straight to spam the blogger may not approve it.
The other thing I mentioned is your name, try just putting Leo instead of @ Accountant Salary and see it it changes anything.

Hi Pauline. I’m so glad your wrote this article. Our good friend Adrienne talked me into doing 5 blogs a day and I just recently started doing this and blog hopping and you answered a couple of questions I actually had. The first was related to figuring out how to keep track of who’s blog I’m visiting. Some are easy as I’m in blogging groups so you get to know the people pretty well. I also thought about a spreadsheet, but I thought that might be too cumbersome after a while. But I didn’t think of signing up to their RSS feed or signing up to see when a new blog is sent. Simple, but just didn’t think of it! Excellent idea so thanks for the tip! It does feel daunting sometimes trying to get to 5 blogs a day. I will increase it shortly after I get a bit more organized. Thanks for posting and providing some insight on effective blog hopping.

It can be a little time consuming of course, once you get into a routine it becomes easier and you get quicker, I try to reply to comments on my own blog in the morning and then late afternoon I go blog hopping. At first I would do it all together but I felt like I was spending all day just writing comments LOL now I have spread it out it works better for me, we all have different routines I am sure that works for us.
I am glad I could help you with this topic, hope you have a great weekend

    Hi Pauline,

First I want to congrats for you 100 posts in this blog.

You have provide very good advice in you 100th post as like as other posts. Commenting on other blog is a good way to get regular traffic and also a way of building backlink. If anyone makes 5 comments per day means he gets at least 5 backlinks that is really amazing.

    Thank you for the advice

      Hi Omar
Thanks for your congrats, I can’t believe it has got to be 100 posts already :)
Blog commenting is such a great way to gain more traffic, plus it lets you connect with fellow bloggers and build up relationships which is very important.
Do you blog hop regularly? if so how many do you manage to visit?
It is great to see you here again, hope you have a great weekend

Funny, I never thought of it like that but you’re right, it’s a whole lot of hopping! I also keep a folder of the RSS feeds of blogs I’ve visited (and liked) so I can stay on top of them. I have also recently put a limit on how many blogs I’ll comment on in a day because it’s easy to get lost in the weeds from all that hopping :) Sometimes a whole morning goes by and I’m commenting, commenting… I find great stuff though!

      Hi Carol
I do love the name “blog hopping” :) I was like you at first and sometimes spent the whole morning commenting, it IS easy to get carried away with this, I do admit on the odd occasion I do spend more time than planned doing this but if I receive a lot of comments on one post I like to reply to them all at once… the rest of the time I limit myself to 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour late afternoon.
Thanks for stopping by, hope you are having a great day.

Hi Pauline, When I first started blogging a couple of years ago I did visit and comment daily, and made a group of good blogging friends. I must admit that while I do try to stay up to date in my Reader there are months when I am otherwise busy working or in creative mode when I just cannot get to it. Every once in a while, like today, I get a few extra minutes to meet new people and see what’s new.

Thanks for stopping by, welcome to my blog :)
It can be hard to keep up with blog commenting when we have so many other things we need to do, it is worth even spending 15 mins a day if you can, you will see some results I am sure. I have made some great connections with other bloggers since I started with this and we all learn and support each other, it is nice not to be alone lol
      Have a great weekend

    Hi Pauline,

You’ve hit a nerve here! As I’ve only recently started blog hopping, this is a subject very dear to my heart – I know I need to be much more disciplined about it, so this is a great prompt.

I must admit, at the moment my commenting schedule is a bit ad hoc – it got out of control when I suddenly started to get more comments on my own blog, because I couldn’t believe how long it was taking me to respond and then make reciprocal visits. At the moment my priority is to visit people who’ve visited me, and sometimes I just don’t have time to do any more than that – as I’m still doing this in my spare time it can be very challenging.

That’s not a complaint, though – I really enjoy visiting and commenting on other people’s sites and learn a lot that way – the fact that it helps drive a bit of traffic is a bonus.

But I DO need to get more organised, so thanks for reminding me of that!

PS Love the look of your site, by the way – and the great images – fantastic job, Pauline!

      Hi Sue
I just love blog hopping, I am totally hooked :) I am meeting some wonderful people…
It must be hard when your time is limited, it’s not easy to keep up if you are receiving a lot of comments to your blog, if you choose the ones that really interest you and feel a connection then only visit these ones, reply to all the comments on each of your posts (if you can as it is important) and see if you can get a routine going.
If you start with say 15 minutes every day and build on that if you can you will see results, I like to spend 1 hour in the morning replying to comments made on my blog, then 1 hour late afternoon visiting other blogs, it seems to be working out well now. I remember when I first started I was all over the place and would end up spending the whole morning commenting and never getting any other work done!
Thanks for your kind words about my site :)
      Hope you enjoy your weekend

    Excellent Advice Pauline!

As a “Blog Hopper” myself, I do the same thing, but don’t go to the lengths you do with making a spread sheet. Oh…what a great idea to keep things organized.

I belong to a few groups, Comment and syndicate them, and try to visit one or two blogs a day in my niche that I don”t know. That’s where I put their blogs on a note.

It is for me a labor of love. What I enjoy most is going to a blog and having a learning experience every time .

      Hi Donna
I was not so organized at the beginning lol but then I stopped and had a re-think, I had pieces of paper and post it notes all over my desk, it was not a good way to keep track!! That is when I started a folder with all the blogs I visit regularly, I was in two minds, a spreadsheet or folder but I tried a folder first, I am thinking I will try a spreadsheet soon and see which works better for me.
I have joined a few groups, mainly on Facebook, where are most of the groups you belong to? I would be interested to find a couple more :)
Have a great weekend and great to have you stop by.

Hello Pauline great post, I think it’s a great idea to visit other blogs to see how things are going. I my self have setup a list of people I visit daily to see what’s new.

This is something every bloggers should be doing because it’s the only way you can really gain loyal readers that you can call online friends. The process for me has been a positive one I assure you.

Thanks so much Pauline for allowing me to add you to that list. Have a wonderful day

Hello Pauline I’m having a GREAT day. You bet I have seen an increase in traffic in-fact, I send a lot of time hopping. Some bloggers don’t respond very well to this method I guess their just glad to have gotten a comment on their blog. The people that I feel are not interested in my friendship or connecting, I just move on.

The people that shows me they want to connect with me and become friends I will add them to my list of bloggers I engage with.

Thanks so much for a great post have a wonderful day :)

I feel sad when I see that someone has taken the time to get their blog set up and running, write good content then stop, they do not realize that by not replying to comments that are left on their post they are stopping themselves gaining more traffic and connecting with their readers!
I too stop visiting blogs after a few times if they are not interacting with me, I move on to someone who appreciates me :)

I have just started blog hopping again for my IM Blog but I have been blog hopping for several years
    for my detox blog.

I have Google alerts for certain keywords delivered to Google Reader. I check that once a day for new blog posts for my health niche and leave comments where I can.

Unfortunately there don’t seem to be many blogs in the health niche that are CommentLuv enabled but I keep checking the lists that others compile as well as Andy’s own list.

Some blogs make you jump through hoops to leave a comment. Some are worth registering with to make a comment and some are not. It can all take time initially but once you are confirmed you are away for future comments.

I have enjoyed reading the other comments.

      Hi Sandy
That is a great idea to sign up for Google Alerts for keywords, I have them set up but for my name so far, it is good as whenever my name is mentioned somewhere I get to know… I will follow you I think and set one up for some keywords as well.
Are most of the blogs in the health niche on the free Blogger or WordPress platform? maybe if they are not on a self hosting they cannot use the commentluv plugin, if they are on self hosting and you are visiting on a regular basis you could recommend they try it?
You can find some great information or ideas for a post from other comments, I enjoy reading them too :)
Hope your day is going great

    Hi Pauline

Great advice and although I don’t always visit as many as I would like each day it has made a difference. I keep a blog log. The bad part is some times one writes a good comment and it never appears on the persons site. Does it get lost in spam? Apparently they do! I have found others in my spam and some have found me in their spam. But the worst is if people just empty their spam without looking. It is usually pretty easy to tell right away if it is spam or not. Most spam rarely use a gravatar. How many times will others come to your site and leave a comment only for it never to show up? I think they will eventually give up and not visit any more. So one really good advice for others is to check their spam.
(Hint: I put 10 comments out in the past month and they have not been found?)
    Thanks for the great information.

      Hi Mary
Welcome to my blog, I love to see a new face :)
Sometimes it can be difficult to keep up with blog hopping, but even if we only get to visit 2 or 3 blogs every day it will be good, it does get easier the more we do it on a regular basis the quicker we become!
It is a shame when you take the tiem to write a comment for it to be lost in spam, to be honest your comment did go to my spam box but I always look through mine and “unspam” any genuine ones. Yes it true most spammers do not use a gravatar but I am sure it can also be due to the URL of the site, I have one blogger here whose comments are always going to spam and I have made a couple of suggestions to him so we can overcome that problem.
I hope your next comment on here gets through straight away, I will let you know :)
Have a great weekend Mary, thanks for stopping by.

Hi Pauline, Only just found this very relevant post – because I was starting to get over-whelmed with my blog-hopping LOL.

Anyway, I now have my list of 5 (you’re in it!) and I’ll be trying to make this a bit more systematic in future.

You’re right, it’s so easy to get caught up in all the interesting stuff out there – even worse if, like me, you feel the need to actually try some of it out!

Incidentally, like Sandy, I find it less easy to do this in the health niche with CommentLuv, but I know Sandy (we went to same college), so will contact,

Anyway. Hope I can be better organized in future, and thanks for the tips/gift.
